Union Home Minister Amit Shah supported Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla against the Opposition’s attempt to remove him from the Chair. Shah emphasized that the Speaker is impartial and serves the entire House, not just a specific party. He criticized the Opposition for challenging the Speaker’s position, stating it undermines democratic principles and the Constitution.
Shah highlighted that the Speaker’s role is crucial, being accountable to all members of the House. He expressed concern over the no-confidence motion, noting that it lasted longer than scheduled due to the high number of participants. Shah stressed that criticizing the Speaker is acceptable, but attempting to remove him threatens the core integrity of the position.
Drawing a comparison between the BJP and Congress, Shah noted that historically, the BJP has not been involved in no-confidence motions, demonstrating a commitment to parliamentary values. He pointed out instances where other parties, like the Samajwadi Party and Communist Party, had previously challenged the Chair during Congress-led governments. Shah warned that questioning the Speaker’s authority could harm India’s parliamentary system and tarnish its image internationally.
