Veteran composer duo Anand-Milind disclosed the hurdles encountered by the Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla starrer ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ before it achieved blockbuster status. Initially, distributors showed no interest in buying the film, criticizing its music as “too weak.” On the music reality show ‘Indian Idol,’ the composers revisited the 1988 romantic drama’s journey after contestants performed one of its songs.
Anand recalled the tough times pre-release, mentioning that distributors found the music lackluster and unsuitable for success. Consequently, Nasir Hussain had to self-release the film in Mumbai as no one was willing to purchase it. Despite the initial setbacks, the film witnessed a remarkable theatrical run post-release, with packed shows even in the following weeks.
The composer nostalgically reminisced about visiting Gaiety-Galaxy theatre in Bandra to witness the audience’s enthusiastic response to ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak.’ He noted that college students frequented the theater solely for the songs, leaving after their favorite tunes played. The film’s enduring popularity was evident as audiences continued to flock to theaters long after its release.
Rapper Badshah, a judge on the music reality show, inquired about the inspiration behind Anand-Milind’s timeless melodies and the challenges of creating music that transcends generations. Anand attributed his father, veteran music composer Chitragupt, as his primary influence. He highlighted the 1960s as a significant inspiration, praising the era’s legendary composers like S. D. Burman and Madan Mohan for their exceptional music. With ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak,’ the duo faced no difficulties in composing, thanks to director Mansoor Khan’s musical understanding and involvement.
Directed by Mansoor Khan and produced by Nasir Hussain, ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ marked the debut of Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla as lead actors. The film emerged as a major success in 1988, with its iconic soundtrack, including hits like ‘Papa Kehte Hain’ and ‘Ae Mere Humsafar,’ remaining popular to this day.
