Olympic champion Armand Duplantis triumphed in the men’s pole vault at the Istvan Gyulai Memorial, the final World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event of 2026. He cleared 6.07 meters but narrowly missed setting a new world record at 6.32 meters.
During the competition, six men were still in contention at 6.00 meters, with Kurtis Marschall, Emmanouil Karalis, and Sondre Guttormsen having already cleared 5.90 meters.
Duplantis, after an initial failure at 6.00 meters, regained the lead by clearing it on his second attempt and further solidified his position with a successful clearance at 6.07 meters.
Duplantis expressed his ambition to attempt breaking the world record again in September as an ambassador for the World Athletics Ultimate Championship. He mentioned that setting new records is always his primary objective.
In another event, Ja’Kobe Tharp showcased his dominance in sprint hurdling by winning the men’s 110m hurdles with a remarkable time of 12.85 seconds. Tharp’s performance hinted at the potential for even greater achievements in the future.
Tharp’s victory, with a lead of 0.16 seconds, demonstrated his prowess over other top hurdlers, with Jamal Britt finishing second in 13.01 seconds and Cordell Tinch in third with a season’s best of 13.06 seconds.
