Asaram, who is serving a life sentence for a minor sexual assault case, has been admitted to a hospital in Jodhpur. He was transferred from Central Jail to Arogyam Hospital for medical treatment under tight security. Officials from the hospital confirmed his arrival on Tuesday night.
A significant police presence was maintained during Asaram’s transfer, and he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance with stringent security measures in place. Asaram had cited various health issues after surrendering before Jodhpur Central Jail and had filed a petition in the Rajasthan High Court to receive treatment at Arogyam Hospital.
Following the Rajasthan High Court’s verdict in his case, Asaram arrived in Jodhpur on May 28. His arrival led to a gathering of supporters at Jodhpur Airport, after which he went to his ashram in Pal village and then underwent a medical examination at AIIMS Jodhpur before surrendering at the Central Jail.
The Rajasthan High Court, comprising Justice Arun Monga and Justice Yogendra Kumar Purohit, upheld the life sentence given to Asaram by the lower court. The Court emphasized the victim’s lifelong suffering and mental trauma caused by the accused’s actions. Asaram’s interim bail was revoked, leading to his surrender before jail authorities.
The case against Asaram dates back to August 2013 when allegations of sexual assault on a minor student at Manai Ashram in Jodhpur emerged. He was convicted by a lower court in April 2018 and sentenced to life imprisonment.
