Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Assam has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first state in India to commercially produce Matcha tea. The historic production took place at the Chota Tingrai Tea Estate in Tinsukia district, as shared by the Chief Minister on social media.
This move marks a diversification of Assam’s tea industry, enhancing its global reputation. Chief Minister Sarma highlighted that the introduction of Matcha tea production in Assam will create new market opportunities, adding value to the state’s tea sector.
The initial batch of Assam-produced Matcha tea was successfully auctioned for Rs 3,000 at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre, indicating a positive reception in the market for this premium product. The Chief Minister attributed this achievement to a ten-year collaboration between India and Japan, focusing on innovation and expertise in the tea sector.
The commercial production of Matcha tea is expected to not only expand Assam’s tea product range beyond traditional black tea but also cater to the increasing global demand for high-quality green tea products. This development underscores Assam’s commitment to modernizing its tea industry while preserving its rich heritage.
