Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed that in the upcoming polls, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will contest 26 Assembly seats, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) will field candidates in 11 seats, and BJP will vie for the remaining 89 seats, indicating progress in alliance negotiations.
After a BJP central election committee meeting in Delhi, Chief Minister Sarma highlighted ongoing discussions on seat adjustments within the alliance, emphasizing a coordinated approach for a strong performance.
With the Assam Assembly comprising 126 seats, BJP is set to contest in 89 seats, amidst heightened political activity in the state as parties finalize alliances and candidate lists ahead of the elections.
In the 2021 Assam Assembly polls, the BJP-led NDA secured a comfortable majority, winning 75 out of 126 seats, with BJP alone clinching 60 seats and AGP securing nine seats, marking a significant political milestone in the state.
The seat-sharing dynamics play a crucial role in Assam’s electoral landscape, especially in regions like Bodoland, where parties like BPF wield significant influence, as the BJP strategizes to expand its presence across Assembly constituencies.
Chief Minister Sarma mentioned that the BJP will unveil its candidate list for the upcoming Assembly polls on Wednesday, with elections scheduled for April 9 and vote counting on May 4.
