Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia praised the passage of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the Assam Assembly, calling it a significant move towards justice for women. The UCC Bill, once approved by the Governor and President, aims to establish a unified civil law system for all religions and communities in the country.
Saikia highlighted that the UCC represents “one nation, one law, and one identity” while preserving the nation’s diverse cultural heritage. He referenced the BJP’s commitment to implementing the UCC if elected, emphasizing the importance of a single set of personal laws for the entire country.
The proposed legislation covers various aspects like marriage, divorce, inheritance, and live-in relationships, regardless of religious affiliations. It also includes provisions to prohibit polygamy and mandate the registration of live-in relationships, aiming to ensure equality and justice for all citizens under a common legal framework.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal welcomed the UCC Bill, foreseeing it as a catalyst for social justice, equality, and effective governance in Assam. While the government asserts the UCC’s role in promoting fairness and social equity, opposition parties and some groups have raised concerns over specific clauses and exemptions in the law.
