The Assam Cabinet has sanctioned a policy allowing Grade-IV employees in government schools to progress to Grade-III positions, enhancing career growth prospects for non-teaching staff in education. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed this decision post a Cabinet meeting, emphasizing the need for a structured promotion framework. Sarma highlighted that while the provision for such promotions existed previously, a formalized process was lacking until now.
The new policy is set to benefit numerous government school employees in Assam by establishing a clear pathway for career advancement within the Education Department. It aims to uplift employee spirits and fulfill longstanding demands of school support staff for better growth opportunities. The approved regulations will define eligibility criteria, promotion protocols, and service conditions for Grade-IV employees transitioning to Grade-III roles.
This initiative aligns with the state government’s broader agenda to enhance administrative efficiency and enhance service conditions for its workforce. Education sector reforms have been a priority for Assam, focusing on infrastructure, teacher recruitment, governance enhancements, and human resource management. The move is anticipated to fill Grade-III vacancies through internal promotions, enabling experienced staff to take on higher responsibilities within the school system.
The Cabinet’s recent discussions encompassed various measures related to employee welfare and administrative reforms, with the school staff promotion policy standing out as a significant outcome. Chief Minister Sarma expressed optimism that the new framework would ensure a transparent and efficient promotion process, recognizing the dedicated service of Grade-IV employees in the Education Department.
