Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated the state government’s dedication to conserving biodiversity, protecting forests, and eradicating poaching on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity. Sarma highlighted Assam’s abundant natural resources, lush forests, and unique wildlife, underscoring the importance of robust conservation initiatives to safeguard the state’s ecological legacy for future generations.
Acknowledging Assam’s diverse natural beauty, Sarma praised the state’s array of biodiversity, ranging from the renowned Kaziranga National Park to the dense forests of Dehing Patkai National Park and other ecological treasures like Manas National Park and Maguri Beel. He emphasized the need for continued efforts to combat forest encroachment and enhance anti-poaching measures in protected areas across Assam.
Sarma affirmed the government’s commitment to intensify actions against forest encroachment and bolster anti-poaching operations within protected zones. He expressed determination to rid Assam of encroachments and ensure a zero-poaching environment, reiterating the state’s dedication to biodiversity conservation.
Assam boasts globally recognized wildlife habitats and national parks that provide sanctuary to endangered species such as the one-horned rhinoceros, Royal Bengal tiger, wild buffalo, Asian elephant, and hoolock gibbon. The state government has ramped up eviction initiatives in reserved forest areas and wildlife sanctuaries to safeguard ecologically sensitive regions from unlawful encroachments.
Authorities have also enhanced surveillance and anti-poaching efforts in national parks, particularly in Kaziranga, which has witnessed a substantial decrease in rhino poaching incidents over the years. The International Day for Biological Diversity, observed annually on May 22, aims to raise awareness about the significance of preserving ecosystems, wildlife, and natural resources worldwide.
