Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the increasing international demand for products from Assam, stating that they are gaining popularity worldwide. He mentioned that these unique goods are not only reaching global markets but also representing the cultural and agricultural heritage of Assam. Sarma expressed optimism about expanding the reach of Assam’s finest products to a broader audience.
The Assam government has been actively promoting the state’s agricultural, handloom, and traditional products in foreign markets. Recent efforts have led to significant progress in exports, especially of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged products. Sarma recently flagged off the first international shipment of GI-tagged Tezpur litchis to Singapore, aiming to enhance the global presence of Assam’s horticultural produce.
In a bid to support local farmers and boost the state’s agrarian economy, the export initiative is expected to improve market access for indigenous products. Assam has also focused on obtaining intellectual property protection and branding for its traditional items. Notably, four heritage products from Assam, including Bihu Pepa, Karbi Anglong Handloom, Bah Silpa (bamboo craft), and Deori Handloom products, have received GI tags, enhancing their market value and authenticity.
Emphasizing the importance of expanding global markets for Assam’s indigenous products, the Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering local livelihoods, preserving traditional crafts, and elevating Assam’s economic standing on the global platform.
