Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the significant enhancement in electricity supply in the state since 2016. He compared the current situation to the frequent power cuts and mismanagement during the Congress regime. Sarma shared a visual on social media platform X showing the increase in electricity supply hours from around 16 hours before 2016 to approximately 22.5 hours a day in 2024.
Sarma criticized the Congress era for its power cuts and darkness caused by mismanagement and corruption in the Electricity Board. He emphasized the positive impact of the improved electricity supply on the people of Assam, stating that it is fueling the dreams and aspirations of both urban and rural residents. The Chief Minister attributed this progress to reforms in the power sector, better governance, and focused efforts to enhance infrastructure.
The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of reliable electricity supply for Assam’s development agenda. He stressed its role in promoting industrial growth, enhancing healthcare services, supporting education, and improving the overall quality of life. Since assuming power in 2016, the BJP-led government in Assam has initiated various measures to upgrade transmission and distribution networks, reduce losses, and expand electrification to remote areas.
Investments have been made in substations and feeder separation projects to improve power supply in the state. Electricity supply has been a significant political issue in Assam, especially during election periods, with parties debating past performance and governance. The Congress, which previously governed the state, has disputed claims of mismanagement, attributing challenges in the power sector to structural issues. As Assembly elections approach, electricity supply and infrastructure development are expected to be key topics in political discussions.
CM Sarma’s social media post is part of the ruling party’s broader narrative showcasing changes made under its governance over the past decade. The party uses governance indicators to compare its performance with previous administrations.
