Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the flood-affected Sonari subdivision in Charaideo district to assess the situation amidst severe flooding in Upper Assam. Sarma inspected flooded villages, interacted with families in relief camps, and discussed rescue and relief efforts with district officials. He highlighted the challenges faced by rescue teams in reaching stranded residents in remote locations.

Sarma described the floods as an unprecedented disaster, expressing concern over the extensive damage and the large number of affected individuals. He acknowledged the efforts of various response agencies, including the NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army, Assam Police, and local administrations, in ongoing rescue and relief operations. The Chief Minister emphasized the crucial financial support provided by the Central Government for flood relief activities in the state.

Addressing the media, Sarma mentioned that the state government receives full financial backing from the Union government for disaster management. He stated that if additional resources are required beyond the allocated funds, the state would seek further assistance from the Prime Minister. Sarma expressed worries about the number of people still stranded in flooded areas and the need for a comprehensive assessment of the overall damage.

The flood situation in Assam remains critical, with over 7.27 lakh people affected across 25 districts between April 29 and July 21. The disaster has resulted in 31 fatalities, with 95 relief camps providing shelter to 18,574 displaced individuals. Ongoing rescue and relief operations continue in the severely impacted regions.
