Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that Air India will start direct flights from Guwahati to Dubai and Abu Dhabi beginning August 4. This move aims to enhance Assam’s international connectivity and establish Guwahati as a pivotal travel and transit hub in the region.
The Chief Minister highlighted that these new international routes follow the recent lifting of travel advisories for Assam by EU member states. This development opens up fresh opportunities for Assam to engage with the global community.
Sarma emphasized that the introduction of these non-stop services will greatly improve international accessibility to Assam and the Northeast region. With the addition of these routes, Guwahati’s airport will have direct connections to four countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Singapore, and Bhutan.
The state government, under Sarma’s leadership, is actively working to expand Guwahati’s international air network. The next goal is to establish direct flight services between Guwahati and Vietnam, with further updates on this initiative expected soon.
This announcement signifies a significant step in Assam’s strategy to enhance global connectivity, promote tourism, attract investments, and facilitate smoother travel for various groups, including businesspersons, students, and the Assamese and Northeastern diaspora living abroad.
Improved air connectivity is a key focus area for the state government, aligning with its vision to position Guwahati as the gateway to Southeast Asia. This enhanced connectivity is anticipated to bolster trade, cultural interactions, and economic partnerships with regional countries, fostering growth and cooperation.
