Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma advised against premature judgments based on a recent opinion poll suggesting a potential third consecutive term for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming 2026 state Assembly elections. The Chief Minister emphasized that critical decisions on seat-sharing within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are still pending.
Responding to a survey indicating the BJP’s projected win of 69 to 74 seats in the 126-member Assembly, CM Sarma urged caution, stating that it is not yet the appropriate time to rely on survey results. He highlighted the uncertainty surrounding seat allocations among alliance partners as a key factor to consider.
CM Sarma pointed out that the survey’s predictions regarding the BJP and Asom Gana Parishad’s seat distribution are subject to further discussions within the NDA. He emphasized the need to await the conclusion of alliance formations within the Opposition, indicating that a clearer political landscape would emerge by February.
The opinion poll, conducted between November 15 and December 31, 2025, foresees the NDA securing nearly 90 seats overall. It anticipates varying seat counts for different parties, with the BJP slightly ahead in vote share compared to the Congress. The regional breakdown suggests a strong NDA presence in Upper Assam and Bodoland, with potential gains in other regions post-delimitation.
