Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed strong confidence that the BJP will secure victory in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. Sarma, campaigning in Gaur Gourbazar, stated, “This time BJP is going to form a government, 100 per cent confirmed.” The elections in West Bengal will be held in two phases covering all 294 constituencies, with voting on April 23 and April 29, and the results announced on May 4.
West Bengal’s electoral process this year is streamlined, with the first phase covering 152 constituencies across 16 districts and the second phase covering the remaining 142 constituencies in seven districts. This marks a departure from the usual multi-phase elections in the state. The decision to hold elections in just two phases is attributed to improved administrative planning and enhanced security measures.
In response to the rejection of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha, CM Sarma made strong political statements. He mentioned that women, unhappy with the bill’s failure, would seek retribution against Mamata Banerjee, the DMK, and the Congress. The proposed bill, aimed at women’s reservation, did not pass due to insufficient support for the required two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha.
