OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, has introduced its AI coding assistant Codex into the ChatGPT mobile app for iOS and Android users. This integration enables developers to remotely monitor, manage, and approve coding tasks using their smartphones. The feature is currently in preview mode for all ChatGPT plans, including Free and Go, in supported regions.
Users can now link their phones to machines running Codex, such as laptops, Mac minis, devboxes, and managed remote environments, to access real-time project updates through the ChatGPT app. This mobile experience allows users to review outputs, approve commands, switch AI models, initiate new coding tasks, and track ongoing threads without the need to go back to their desktop systems.
OpenAI mentioned that the mobile app synchronizes real-time updates like screenshots, terminal output, diffs, test results, and approvals, while keeping files, credentials, and permissions on the connected machine. The company reported that over 4 million users are actively utilizing Codex on a weekly basis.
Furthermore, OpenAI has made remote SSH support and hooks available across all plans. It has also introduced programmatic access tokens for Enterprise and Business users. The company disclosed its plans to support HIPAA-compliant use of Codex in local environments for eligible ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces, targeting healthcare and enterprise applications. Additionally, OpenAI announced that it will soon enable support for connecting the ChatGPT mobile app to Codex on Windows systems.
