Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed disapproval of an incident involving Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Assam’s traditional ‘patka’, citing it as a sign of insensitivity towards the culture and sentiments of the region. Speaking at a state government event in Digboi, Sarma highlighted past instances of similar disregard by Gandhi towards the people of Assam and the North East.
Sarma emphasized that the state government would not pursue legal action in this matter, underlining that respect for traditions and cultural symbols should stem from personal values and conscience, not enforced by law. He called on Rahul Gandhi to exhibit sensitivity towards regional customs before seeking political backing from the area.
The controversy arose when videos circulated on social media showing Rahul Gandhi allegedly mishandling the Assamese patka, a symbol of honor and cultural significance. This incident prompted strong reactions from the ruling BJP, accusing Gandhi of repeatedly undermining regional identities.
