Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the increasing importance of the Barak Valley in the state’s development roadmap and the national Act East vision. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to launch the nationwide Vibrant Village Programme-II (VVP-II) from Cachar district. Sarma shared a preview of the upcoming Barak Valley Secretariat on a social media platform, emphasizing the region’s growing significance.
The Chief Minister noted that the Barak Valley, previously neglected for decades, has now become a vital area in Assam’s development strategy and India’s Act East policy. He mentioned the government’s strong focus on advancing development in the region through various infrastructure and connectivity projects. One major initiative highlighted by Sarma is the endeavor to reduce travel time between Guwahati and Silchar to just five hours via an upcoming expressway.
Sarma stressed that enhanced road connectivity will promote economic activities, trade, tourism, and people-to-people interactions, further integrating the Barak Valley with the rest of the state. He reaffirmed the commitment of the “Double Engine Government” to ensure balanced development in both the Barak and Brahmaputra valleys. The government is implementing several programs to bolster administrative infrastructure, healthcare, education, and job opportunities in the Barak Valley.
Projects like the Barak Valley Secretariat are expected to improve governance by bringing administration closer to the people and facilitating quicker delivery of public services. Sarma reiterated the government’s dedication to inclusive growth, ensuring that every region progresses in Assam’s development journey. The Vibrant Village Programme-II aims to enhance border villages nationwide by enhancing infrastructure, livelihoods, essential services, and national security.
