Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid tribute to legendary Santhal freedom fighters Sidho Murmu and Kanhu Murmu on Hul Diwas. He praised their courageous struggle against injustice and exploitation, calling it an enduring inspiration for the nation and a significant chapter in India’s freedom movement.
The Chief Minister highlighted the immortal place of Santhal Hul in India’s history of resistance against oppression. He emphasized that the message of courage, sacrifice, and determination from the Santhal Hul continues to inspire generations. Sarma expressed his respect for Sidho-Kanhu and all the heroic warriors of the Santhal Hul on this day.
Hul Diwas, observed annually on June 30, commemorates the historic Santhal rebellion of 1855 led by Sidho and Kanhu Murmu. The rebellion was a response to the exploitative policies of the British colonial administration and the oppressive zamindari system. Santhal Hul is recognized as one of the earliest organized tribal revolts against British rule in India.
Thousands of Santhals from regions including Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Bihar participated in the movement. They demanded protection of their land, forests, and traditional rights while resisting economic exploitation and colonial oppression. Despite the British defeating the rebellion, it remains a significant event in India’s struggle for independence.
The Santhal Hul inspired subsequent anti-colonial movements and underscored the vital role of tribal communities in resisting foreign rule. It brought attention to issues such as land alienation, exploitation by moneylenders, and the denial of traditional rights. The movement was not just political but also a social quest for justice and dignity.
CM Sarma praised the courage, determination, and sacrifices of Sidho, Kanhu, and other Santhal warriors. He stated that their legacy continues to motivate people nationwide to uphold values of justice, equality, patriotism, and national pride.
