Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced plans to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill during the upcoming Assembly session. He also hinted at a state cabinet expansion scheduled for the first week of June. Sarma expressed confidence in the UCC Bill’s passage, emphasizing the government’s commitment to this legislation.
The Chief Minister disclosed that the cabinet expansion would occur gradually in early June. Additionally, he mentioned that the Assembly session would kick off with the election of a new Speaker for the Assam Legislative Assembly. Sarma assured that the government is moving forward with its promise to enact the UCC in Assam.
During a press briefing, Sarma confirmed the government’s intention to present the Uniform Civil Code Bill in the ongoing session. He reiterated the administration’s dedication to passing the UCC in the very first session under his leadership. The proposed UCC Bill is expected to spark political discussions, with the BJP advocating for equal civil laws for all citizens, regardless of religion.
The Assam government has been actively pursuing various legislative and administrative reforms to enhance governance transparency and uniformity. While the Chief Minister did not delve into the specifics of the UCC Bill’s provisions, its introduction is anticipated to elicit diverse opinions from different political factions.
