Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the eastern and northeastern regions of India will be crucial in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. He mentioned that the BJP is expected to secure a significant number of seats from these areas. Sarma highlighted the growing political influence of the BJP in these regions, emphasizing its potential impact on the party’s performance in the upcoming general elections.
Sarma emphasized the increasing political and economic collaboration among the eastern and northeastern states, creating a new corridor for growth and development in the country. He expressed confidence that this unity would have a substantial influence on India’s future trajectory. The Northeast, with 25 Lok Sabha seats across eight states, and eastern India, with around 117 seats, collectively hold approximately 142 seats in the Lok Sabha, making them pivotal battlegrounds for national parties.
The BJP has been expanding its presence in the Northeast over the past decade and is part of ruling coalitions in most states in the region. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the NDA secured a majority of seats in the Northeast, with the BJP maintaining its dominance in Assam. Sarma’s comments coincide with the BJP’s efforts to strengthen its organizational structure in West Bengal ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The eastern and northeastern regions are considered vital to the BJP’s electoral strategy as it aims to solidify its support base leading up to the 2029 parliamentary elections.
