The Assam government has declared a holiday in the Cachar district to pay respects to Kabindra Purkayastha, a veteran BJP leader and former Minister of State for telecommunications, who passed away after a prolonged illness. This gesture allows people to honor his contributions and remember his legacy. Purkayastha, who breathed his last at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, will be laid to rest on Thursday.

Tributes have been pouring in from top BJP leaders following Purkayastha’s demise. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the loss, praising Purkayastha as a dedicated public servant who played a significant role in Assam’s political and social spheres. Modi highlighted Purkayastha’s commitment to public service and his contributions to Assam’s progress, acknowledging his pivotal role in the BJP’s growth in the state.

Leaders from various political backgrounds have honored Purkayastha’s legacy, recognizing his instrumental role in shaping the BJP’s presence in Assam and the Northeast. Beginning his public service journey with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1951, Purkayastha later became a key figure in the BJP’s organizational structure. He was known for his advocacy of regional issues and his efforts in strengthening the party’s grassroots support in the region.
