The crucial phase of the Assam electoral battle unfolds on Monday as the counting of votes for the 2026 Assembly elections commences in the state. The outcome will decide whether the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secures a third consecutive term or if the opposition alliance makes significant headway.
Counting will be carried out at 40 centers across Assam’s 35 districts, with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) from all 126 Assembly constituencies securely stored in strong rooms under constant surveillance. Special arrangements have been made in districts with larger constituencies, such as Nagaon, Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, and Jorhat, where multiple counting venues have been designated.
To ensure law and order, a robust security setup has been implemented, with twenty-five companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) safeguarding counting centers and strong rooms. Additionally, about 800 unarmed police personnel will oversee the transportation of EVMs from storage sites to counting halls.
Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel disclosed the deployment of two extra CAPF companies on static reserve duty, along with 93 State Armed Police companies stationed across districts. Furthermore, 85 special assault teams are on standby to address any potential disturbances during the counting process.
