Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya oversaw the swearing-in of 12 ministers in Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s cabinet, finalizing the formation of the new state government post the NDA’s significant win in the recent Assembly elections. The oath-taking ceremony took place at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati, attended by Chief Minister Sarma, senior BJP leaders, legislators, and government officials.
The newly appointed Cabinet Ministers include Ashwini Ray Sarkar, Ashok Singhal, Bimal Borah, Biswajit Daimary, Jayanta Malla Baruah, Kaushik Rai, Keshab Mahanta, Krishnendu Paul, Nilima Devi, Pijush Hazarika, Ranoj Pegu, and Susanta Borgohain. This brings the total number of ministers in the Council of Ministers to 17, including Chief Minister Sarma and the four ministers previously sworn in.
The composition of the new cabinet demonstrates a mix of continuity and change, with experienced ministers from the previous government retained alongside new faces. Notable leaders like Ashok Singhal, Pijush Hazarika, Jayanta Malla Baruah, Ranoj Pegu, Bimal Borah, and AGP leader Keshab Mahanta have maintained their Cabinet positions, showcasing the party’s trust in their administrative capabilities.
Moreover, Ashwini Ray Sarkar, Biswajit Daimary, Nilima Devi, and Susanta Borgohain have entered the Council of Ministers for the first time, with Daimary previously serving as the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly. The new cabinet also sees the departure of some ministers from the previous government, including Chandra Mohan Patowary, Jogen Mohan, and Urkhao Gwra Brahma.
Ranjeet Kumar Dass, a former Minister, has been appointed as the Speaker of the Assembly. The cabinet formation is seen by political observers as a move to ensure administrative continuity while enhancing regional and social representation in the government. This development comes after Sarma’s reelection as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term post the NDA’s resounding victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
