Assam’s Guwahati experienced urban flooding in a locality due to heavy rainfall. The Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) reported partial waterlogging in Satgaon near SFS School under Ward No. 7 of the Guwahati Municipal area. The incident affected normal movement briefly, causing inconvenience to commuters.
The urban flood report mentioned that only Kamrup Metropolitan district was impacted by the rain-induced flooding. The affected revenue circle was Dispur. No casualties, injuries, or evacuations were reported in connection with the flooding incident.
Authorities confirmed that no relief camps or distribution centers were opened, signifying that the situation was under control and did not require emergency measures. The report highlighted that there was no damage to houses, roads, bridges, or other infrastructure in the affected area.
No human displacement or livestock losses were recorded, and no rescue teams, boats, helicopters, or medical units were deployed as the flooding was minor and localized. Urban flooding has been a recurring issue for Guwahati during the monsoon, with low-lying areas facing water accumulation after heavy rainfall.
Areas like Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Hatigaon, Rukminigaon, and Satgaon often experience drainage issues during intense showers, leading to disruptions in daily life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted more rain in parts of Assam, increasing the risk of further waterlogging in vulnerable areas of the city.
The state government has been conducting drain desiltation, upgrading pumping stations, and clearing roadside drains in Guwahati ahead of the monsoon season. However, experts emphasize the need for long-term urban planning and modern stormwater management systems to effectively address the city’s persistent flooding challenges.
