Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States unveiled a Pillar-II signature project under the AUKUS trilateral security partnership in Singapore. The project aims to develop advanced payloads and systems for Uncrewed Undersea Vehicles (UUVs) for the AUKUS partners, with deliveries set to commence in 2027.
The joint announcement was made by Australia’s Minister of Defence and Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, and UK Secretary of State for Defence John Healey at the US Embassy in Singapore. The initiative is designed to enhance the partners’ capabilities in safeguarding critical national seabed infrastructure and strengthening various warfare domains.
The project will focus on enhancing surveillance, reconnaissance, logistics operations, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, mine countermeasures, electronic warfare, and contested littoral manoeuvre capabilities. Additionally, the statement highlighted the progress of Pillar I, which supports Australia’s acquisition of Conventionally-Armed, Nuclear-Powered Submarines.
The ministers confirmed the advancement of the Submarine Rotational Force-West (SRF-West) and finalized arrangements for its establishment by 2027. Furthermore, they acknowledged the strides made in streamlining Australia’s acquisition of Virginia-class submarines (VCS) and the development of SSN-AUKUS to bolster warfighting capabilities for the UK and Australia.
The three nations also expressed their commitment to expanding the AUKUS license-free environment by reducing the list of excluded technologies. The signature project is expected to enhance collective deterrence efforts and maritime superiority by providing advanced capabilities to the armed forces of the AUKUS nations.
