The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) conducted a Phase III clinical trial showing that Ayurvedic formulations are as effective as standard iron-folic acid supplements in treating moderate iron deficiency anemia in women. The trial, in collaboration with the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), involved nearly 4,000 non-pregnant women aged 18-49 with moderate anemia. The study compared Punarnavadi Mandura alone and in combination with Drakshavaleha against standard iron-folic acid supplementation over a 90-day period.
The ICMR organized the ‘1st ICMR Annual Clinical Trial Meet 2026’ to enhance India’s clinical trial ecosystem and promote evidence-based integrative medicine research. The event also marked the launch of a report on advancing First-in-Human Phase 1 Clinical Trials in India. The report identified key obstacles hindering early-phase clinical trials in the country and suggested measures to bolster regulatory capacity and streamline approval processes.
Experts from the pharmaceutical industry, Contract Research Organisations (CROs), academia, and national regulatory agencies contributed to the development of the report. Discussions during the event focused on translating scientific evidence into public health policy and healthcare practices. The gathering aimed to address emerging public health challenges and improve healthcare delivery mechanisms by emphasizing robust clinical research systems and ethical governance.
