Bangladesh is experiencing heightened worries regarding communal violence and the security of Hindu minority communities due to extremist activities in various parts of the country. Of particular concern is the escalating pressure from radical Islamist factions calling for the demolition of a significant Hindu religious site in Palashbari Upazila of Gaibandha district. This localized dispute has now transformed into a broader ideological movement targeting Hindu religious symbols and establishments nationwide.
Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury, Editor of the Bangladeshi newspaper ‘Blitz,’ has cautioned that urgent global intervention is necessary to counter the “sinister” efforts of Islamist extremists against Hindus and their religious sites. Without swift action, Bangladesh risks descending into a perilous cycle of communal violence, potentially leading to widespread harm to the Hindu population and the onset of violence or even genocide.
Following the general elections on February 12, hopes were high among citizens, especially religious minorities, for relief from insecurity and political uncertainties under the previous Muhammad Yunus-led interim government. However, recent events indicate a resurgence of extremist elements exploiting religious sentiments and communal divides to destabilize the nation and undermine democratic institutions. The intensified campaign against Hindu minorities was triggered by claims made by former West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee regarding the murder of Bangladeshi radical Islamist leader Sharif Osman Hadi.
Choudhury highlighted that pro-Pakistan and pro-Turkey online activists have orchestrated coordinated campaigns portraying the Gaibandha religious complex as an extension of Indian influence. Allegations without substantial evidence have been made against project caretaker Harichandra Taroni Das, linking him to Indian intelligence agencies and claiming Indian intelligence funding for the project. Choudhury further accused propagandists operating from French and American territories of inciting violence against Hindus in Bangladesh and promoting extremist agendas.
The government of Bangladesh is now facing a critical challenge, according to Choudhury, who emphasized the imperative for authorities to safeguard all citizens and religious institutions while firmly quelling any instigations of violence or communal animosity. He stressed the necessity for law enforcement agencies to closely monitor extremist activities, investigate threats against religious sites, and take stringent legal actions against individuals fostering violence.
