As Bangladesh faces a severe measles outbreak, two more children succumbed to the disease, raising the death toll to 805, according to the Directorate General of Health Services. The fatalities were recorded within a 24-hour period, with the total suspected deaths reaching 710. Despite the confirmed deaths remaining at 95, the number of suspected cases has surged to 121,200 since March 15.
Reports indicate that in the last 24 hours, there were 848 suspected measles cases, bringing the total to 15,007 during the same period. The country also reported 166 new confirmed cases amid the ongoing public health crisis. An average of nearly four children die daily from measles, with over 800 hospitalizations each day, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
The outbreak has persisted due to vaccination gaps affecting around 40 lakh children, infections beyond the campaign’s target age group, and weak infection prevention measures. The situation has not improved significantly despite vaccination efforts, with hospitals still receiving unvaccinated patients. The government, although claiming to have surpassed emergency vaccination targets, faces challenges in vaccine coverage, as highlighted by the continuous influx of patients.
Health experts emphasize the need for improved planning and public outreach to address the vaccination gaps and enhance measles control measures. The outbreak’s severity in July underscores the importance of sustained efforts to combat the disease and protect vulnerable populations.
