Bangladesh’s Awami League has expressed worry about the rise in false cases against citizens, highlighting the challenges faced by detainees in securing their release even after being granted bail by the court. The party mentioned that a complex system within the police obstructs the practical implementation of bail orders, causing delays in the release process. Investigations by the Awami League revealed instances where detainees faced prolonged detention despite court-granted bail.
The Awami League emphasized the importance of promptly executing bail orders as per the law. However, it alleged that a lengthy process, involving various authorities from the prosecution to the police station, leads to intentional delays in releasing detainees. The party claimed that demands for money at different stages of the process hinder the timely implementation of bail orders, causing distress to families awaiting the release of their loved ones.
According to the Awami League, innocent individuals are subjected to harassment due to misuse of provisions like the “interim report” in the Criminal Procedure Code. The party accused investigating officers of favoring influential individuals involved in past protests, while innocent citizens suffer due to lack of financial resources. The Awami League stressed that bail, a constitutional right, should not be commodified at the administrative level, calling for urgent reforms such as digital tracking and accountability measures.
