Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has named Omar bin Hadi, the brother of the late Islamist leader Osman bin Hadi, as a Second Secretary at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Birmingham, UK. The appointment, made on a three-year contractual basis, was disclosed through a notification signed by Abul Hayat Rafique, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Public Administration, as reported by Dhaka Tribune.
Omar bin Hadi is restricted from pursuing any other profession, business, or employment affiliations with government, semi-government, private institutions, or organizations, according to the notification. Specific terms and conditions related to his appointment will be outlined in a corresponding contract.
Osman Hadi, Omar’s brother, tragically passed away after being shot in the head on December 12 by assailants on a motorcycle while traveling on Paltan Road in Dhaka. Despite being airlifted to Singapore for medical treatment, he succumbed to his injuries on December 18.
Omar’s brother, Hadi, aged 32, was a prominent figure as a spokesperson for Inqilab Moncho and gained national recognition during the mass protests in July–August 2024, which led to the downfall of the government under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He was also a parliamentary candidate for the upcoming February 12 elections and was known for promoting Islamist and anti-India narratives in Bangladesh.
Accusing a faction within the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government of plotting his brother’s murder to disrupt the February 2026 polls, Omar bin Hadi criticized the government during a gathering organized by Inqilab Moncho outside the National Museum in Dhaka. He urged authorities to ensure a swift trial for the perpetrators to maintain a conducive election environment and warned of consequences if justice for Osman Hadi was not served promptly.
Bangladesh has experienced a surge in violence targeting minorities, media outlets, cultural establishments, and diplomatic missions during the tenure of the Yunus-led interim government.
