The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plans to conduct a thorough performance evaluation of the men’s T20I team once the ongoing tour concludes. Following a significant defeat to England in Bristol, where India lost by nine wickets, the team’s struggles have become apparent, with England securing a 3-0 lead in the series. Secretary Devajit Saikia highlighted the need for a review to address the team’s current performance issues.
Saikia, speaking from Edinburgh during the ICC Annual Conference, expressed confidence in identifying and rectifying the challenges faced by the men’s T20I team. He emphasized the importance of analyzing the problems encountered by the team against England and Ireland, aiming to find solutions post the ongoing series. The review is scheduled to take place immediately after the ODI series in England concludes on July 19.
In the recent match in Bristol, except for skipper Shreyas Iyer’s resilient 80 runs, the Indian batting lineup struggled, managing a below-par total of 158/7. England’s captain Harry Brook and Phil Salt comfortably chased down the target with six overs to spare. India’s return to T20I cricket has been turbulent, marked by defeats to Ireland and England, exposing issues in both batting and bowling departments.
The Indian team faces challenges with inconsistent performances from the top and middle order, struggling to adapt to challenging pitches. The absence of key bowlers like Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah has impacted the team’s bowling strength, coupled with lapses in fielding. To maintain their top spot in the men’s T20I rankings, India must secure a victory in the final match against England at The Rose Bowl in Southampton on Saturday.
Looking ahead, the effectiveness of the forthcoming review in addressing the team’s shortcomings remains to be seen before India’s upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe, commencing on July 23 in Harare.
