Kolkata, Aug 11 (IANS) Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday afternoon faced protest slogans at Shyambazar five‑point crossing in North Kolkata, just two days after she was targeted by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers while visiting the family of a Trinamool Congress worker who allegedly died in police custody in Kanchrapara, North 24 Parganas district.
Tuesday’s protests were restricted to “thief” and “go‑back” slogans, unlike the incident at Kanchrapara on Sunday when demonstrators surrounded Mamata Banerjee’s car, hurled mud and a torn slipper towards her, and shouted slogans calling her a “thief”.
On Tuesday, Mamata Banerjee arrived at Shyambazar to garland the statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The situation was peaceful while she garlanded the statue.
After completing the garlanding process, she launched a scathing attack against the BJP, accusing the party of insulting several legendary freedom fighters, including Netaji.
As she was about to leave, some BJP activists assembled and shouted slogans calling her a “thief”. The tension escalated briefly, but a large police contingent quickly brought the situation under control.
Mamata Banerjee soon left the spot.
“We did not raise any slogan or display any demonstration while the former Chief Minister was garlanding the statue of Netaji. But after that we just called her a thief. There is nothing wrong in that,” a protesting BJP supporter said.
On Monday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said there would be no negligence in the security of his predecessor, adding that proper arrangements would be made if she informed the police about her visits in advance.
