Bharat Singh Chauhan has been unanimously re-elected as the Chairman of the Commonwealth Chess Association for the 2026–2030 term. The decision was made during the Association’s Annual General Body Meeting in Wasakaduwa, Sri Lanka. Several key office-bearers and executive members were also reappointed, with a new initiative introduced to enhance youth participation in chess.
Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidsh Sanusi was elected unopposed as Deputy Chairman, while G. Luxman Wijesuriya retained his position as General Secretary. Vicky Magu was appointed as Treasurer. The executive panel now includes members from various Commonwealth countries such as Mauritius, Barbados, Kenya, New Zealand, and Cyprus.
The election process was overseen by retired High Court judge Santiago Pushpa Kumara Ekaratne, who acted as the Returning Officer. Chauhan’s re-election marks a continuation of his leadership in the chess world for almost five decades, emphasizing his role in advancing the game within Commonwealth nations.
The Commonwealth Chess Association praised Chauhan’s re-election, highlighting his visionary leadership and dedication to promoting chess. The Association also announced the launch of the Commonwealth School Chess Championship, set to debut in Malaysia in October 2026. Wijesuriya’s reappointment as General Secretary was commended for his administrative contributions and long-term planning efforts.
