India’s top fencer, Bhavani Devi, has issued a formal apology for her behavior at the Asian Fencing Championships 2026 Team Event in New Delhi. Following her receipt of a Black Card during the championship, she faced a two-month suspension as per disciplinary regulations. The Fencing Association of India (FAI) disclosed that Bhavani Devi expressed remorse and emphasized her commitment to the sport’s principles and officials.
In response to the suspension, Bhavani Devi has submitted an appeal to the International Fencing Federation (FIE) requesting a review and potential reduction or removal of the penalty. The FAI highlighted her unblemished disciplinary history in international competitions, underscoring her integrity throughout her illustrious career. The impending World Championship adds urgency to the situation, as a prolonged suspension could prevent her participation in the upcoming prestigious event.
Sources close to the matter revealed that Bhavani Devi’s actions stemmed from a disagreement with a referee’s decision during a bout, leading her to discard her mask in protest. Notably, there is currently no active ban in place, with ongoing discussions between the FAI and the international governing body of fencing. The FAI remains optimistic that the FIE will consider Bhavani Devi’s apology, exemplary track record, and contributions to the sport while deliberating on the case’s outcome.
