Bhedaghat, known as the ‘grand canyon of India’, is a popular tourist spot famous for its stone art, especially marble sculpting. Skilled artisans in this area craft intricate deities and sculptures from the soft marble along the Narmada River.
These sculptors not only create beautiful artworks but also provide livelihoods to many families. The marble and stone carving industry in Bhedaghat has become a sustainable source of employment and income for numerous residents.
Under the PM Vishwakarma Yojana, training camps have been organized to nurture aspiring craftsmen and sculptors, boosting growth in the sector. Artisans expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for initiating this scheme, acknowledging his support for their work.
Sculptor Sheikh Ahfaz highlighted the region’s renowned artwork and handcrafted items, which received high praise from Prime Minister Modi during an event at Yashobhoomi. He mentioned presenting special gifts to the Prime Minister and expressed appreciation for Modi’s focus on grassroots artisans.
Aaron Khan, a seasoned marble sculptor with 40 years of experience, emphasized the variety of marble sculptures produced in Bhedaghat, all meticulously handcrafted by skilled artisans. The region is also known for its striking marble cliffs, with limestone formations towering up to 30 meters above the river.
Bhedaghat’s marble is distinctive for its array of colors, including white, grey, pink, and bluish-grey, adding to the allure of the marble cliffs.
