Actress Bhumi Pednekkar, known for her diverse language skills, revealed that mastering Bundelkhandi for the movie ‘Sonchiriya’ was her toughest linguistic challenge. Despite her love for learning new languages, she found Bundelkhandi particularly demanding and underwent months of training to perfect it. In the film, set in the Chambal region, Bhumi portrayed a character speaking entirely in the Bundeli dialect alongside late actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
The 2019 drama ‘Sonchiriya’, directed by Abhishek Chaubey, revolves around a group of dacoits who identify themselves as Baaghis (rebels) in the Bundelkhandi-speaking landscape. The movie, which also featured Ashutosh Rana and Ranvir Shorey, was a unique portrayal of dacoit life in the heartland of India. ‘Sonchiriya’ was jointly produced by RSVP Movies, Vashu Bhagnani, Jackky Bhagnani, and Deepshikha Deshmukh, in collaboration with MacGuffin Pictures.
In a recent interaction, Bhumi Pednekkar discussed her linguistic challenges and experiences while working on ‘Mere Husband Ki Biwi’, directed by Mudassar Aziz. The film, starring Arjun Kapoor, Rakul Preet Singh, and Bhumi in lead roles, also includes a supporting cast featuring Shakti Kapoor, Anita Raj, Dino Morea, and Aditya Seal. The technical aspects of the movie were handled by Manoj Kumar Khatoi for cinematography, Ninad Khanolkar for editing, and John Stewart Eduri for music composition.
Despite its release on 21 February 2025, ‘Mere Husband Ki Biwi’ did not fare well at the box office, marking a setback for the project. Bhumi’s dedication to linguistic authenticity and her portrayal of diverse characters continue to showcase her versatility as an actress.
