Panic struck the Koni area of Bilaspur district in Chhattisgarh as around 4,744 chickens suddenly died at a state-run poultry farm, confirming Bird Flu as the cause. The outbreak has prompted a swift multi-departmental response to contain the virus from spreading further.
Dr. G.S. Tanwar, Joint Director of the Veterinary Department, revealed that a significant number of birds started dying mysteriously between March 19 and March 24. Laboratory tests conducted on samples collected from the deceased chickens confirmed the presence of the highly contagious avian influenza virus.
Immediate measures were taken, including the burial of 22,808 hatchlings and other birds, along with 80 quintals of feedstock and plastic utensils. The government is now sanitizing steel and iron materials to prevent the disease from spreading.
Samples from all workers at the poultry farm tested negative for the virus. The authorities have marked a one-kilometer radius around the farm as an Infected Zone and a 10-kilometer radius as a Surveillance Zone, implementing strict protocols to manage the situation effectively.
A ban on the movement of poultry, eggs, and related materials has been enforced within the designated zones. Compensation will be provided to affected owners, and public announcements are being made to caution against selling birds and to ensure compliance with containment measures.
