The BJP state chief, Samik Bhattacharya, addressed concerns about the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in West Bengal ahead of its tabling in the Assembly on June 29. He emphasized that Scheduled Tribes would not fall under the purview of the proposed Bill. Bhattacharya highlighted the BJP’s longstanding support for a Uniform Civil Code in India, stating it was a key aspect of the party’s election manifesto in the recent West Bengal assembly polls.
The BJP leader stressed the importance of a Uniform Civil Code in ensuring equal rights and duties for all citizens under the law. He explained that a uniform civil structure, rather than diverse personal laws based on religion, could promote unity, justice, and constitutional equality. Bhattacharya also mentioned that the UCC, if enacted, would standardize civil provisions for all citizens, potentially addressing issues like polygamy permitted under certain personal laws.
Moreover, Bhattacharya clarified that the UCC did not include provisions regarding determining the number of children. He urged against spreading confusion about the Bill, emphasizing the dual objectives of establishing equal civil laws for all citizens and safeguarding the special rights of Scheduled Tribes as enshrined in the Constitution.
