A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, headed by West Bengal’s legislature party leader Suvendu Adhikari, arrived at Lok Bhavan to formally stake their claim to form the government with Governor R.N. Ravi. State BJP President Samik Bhattacharya and other party members were also part of the delegation. Adhikari and Bhattacharya submitted a letter with the signatures of all 207 BJP legislators to stake their formal claim for forming the new government.
The oath ceremony is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m., coinciding with the birth anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore as per the Bengali calendar. Governor Ravi will administer the oath in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Ministers from other BJP-ruled states, Union Cabinet members, and top Central BJP leaders. The Governor’s order for the dissolution of the previous Assembly automatically dissolved the Mamata Banerjee-led government.
Following the dissolution, Mamata Banerjee is now the former Chief Minister, despite not submitting her resignation traditionally. Suvendu Adhikari is set to become the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal, succeeding Banerjee, who held the position for the past 15 years. Adhikari emphasized a “collective leadership” approach for running the new state administration, focusing on consensus among cabinet members rather than unilateral decisions.
