A delegation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Punjab BJP state President Kewal Dhillon, met the state Election Commissioner to address alleged irregularities during the recent municipal elections. The delegation highlighted concerns such as booth capturing, voter list manipulation, and misuse of official resources reported across the state.
The BJP urged the Election Commission to promptly address the complaints to uphold democratic principles and ensure the integrity of the electoral process. Additionally, they requested the cancellation of polling in areas where irregularities were suspected and emphasized the importance of fair and transparent elections in upholding public trust in democracy.
State President Dhillon emphasized the party’s commitment to safeguarding voters’ democratic rights and ensuring that elections are conducted without fear, coercion, or abuse of power. The municipal elections witnessed a 64% voter turnout to elect representatives for 102 civic bodies, including municipal corporations, councils, and nagar panchayats.
The counting of votes is scheduled for May 29, with 115 counting centers established across the state under tight security measures, including a three-layer security system and CCTV surveillance. The results will be updated online as the ward counting progresses, with State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhuri expecting a clear outcome by around noon.
