The BJP government, under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, has directed the reopening of cases linked to the 2021 post-poll violence in West Bengal. A state official revealed that the government also emphasized cracking down on illegal cattle smuggling. The directive highlighted the need for a thorough review of old cases of political violence related to the 2021 Assembly Election for appropriate legal actions.
The order stressed the careful review of Final Reports (FRTs) submitted in connection with the post-poll incident cases of 2021. It specified that cases should be reopened and investigated diligently in case of any investigative lapses. Additionally, the government mentioned the possibility of registering fresh cases where specific incidents were not previously reported or where preliminary inquiries indicate a cognizable offense.
The directive mandated that the Superintendent of Police (SP) or Commissioner of Police (CP) personally oversee the process. It also called for the continuous monitoring of case investigations and trials post the submission of charge sheets. Following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, numerous instances of post-poll violence occurred, with the Trinamool Congress retaining power in the state.
