The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat held a meeting of its State Election Committee to discuss appointing key office-bearers in local bodies after recent electoral victories. Chaired by State President Jagdish Vishwakarma, the meeting included Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi. Deliberations are set to continue for about three days to finalize appointments.
The meeting aims to decide on 15 municipal corporation mayors and 33 district panchayat presidents. A party official mentioned that the process involves reviewing the local body election results in a three-stage approach. Initial consultations with local leaders and winners were followed by discussions with district-level units and party observers, with decisions expected within three days.
Following the BJP’s success in the state local body elections on April 26, the party secured victories in all 15 municipal corporations, as well as in various rural local bodies. The Congress party lagged behind in most areas, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) made minor gains in specific regions. The selection of candidates for leadership roles considers factors like organizational experience, electoral track record, and regional representation.
The outcome of this three-day meeting is crucial as it will determine the leadership of key civic institutions at the municipal and district levels in Gujarat.
