Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for questioning Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs, alleging her statements show frustration amid electoral pressure. Prasad highlighted that Banerjee had won twice through EVMs and became Chief Minister through them, questioning her change in stance now that she faces opposition.
Prasad also noted that various opposition leaders, including those from the Congress, have been elected through EVMs. He suggested that Banerjee’s frustration indicates her potential loss in the elections. JD(U) National Spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan echoed similar sentiments, calling Banerjee’s remarks “anti-democratic” and emphasizing the importance of citizens’ duty to vote.
The reactions come amidst escalating political tensions ahead of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections. Banerjee had urged voters to stop polling in case of EVM malfunctions and to stay vigilant against any attempts to influence the electoral process. She also warned about potential interference by the BJP using Central Armed Police Forces and outsiders to sway voters.
CM Banerjee stressed the need for vigilance during the counting process and encouraged citizens, especially women, to actively safeguard the electoral process. The political atmosphere in the state continues to intensify as the elections draw near.
