In the initial counting rounds of the Assam Assembly elections, the BJP-led NDA is ahead in 36 seats, while the Congress-led opposition alliance leads in 10 constituencies. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is leading from the Jalukbari Assembly seat, providing an early advantage to the ruling alliance.
The counting process is underway at 40 centers across Assam’s 35 districts. Security measures are stringent, with EVMs from all 126 constituencies stored under constant surveillance in strongrooms.
Special arrangements have been made in districts with larger constituencies. For instance, Nagaon has three counting venues, while Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, and Jorhat each have two centers. A multi-layered security system is in place to maintain law and order during the counting process.
To ensure security, 25 CAPF companies are guarding counting centers and strong rooms. Additionally, around 800 unarmed police personnel are involved in the transportation of EVMs under supervision. Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel mentioned the deployment of additional CAPF companies on static reserve duty and the presence of State Armed Police across districts.
Authorities have also set up 85 special assault teams to promptly address any untoward incidents during the counting process. The Assembly elections, held on April 9 with a high voter turnout of 85.96%, saw 722 candidates in the fray, including 59 women contestants.
