The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is holding a Legislature Party meeting in Guwahati on Sunday to choose its leader, setting the stage for the NDA government formation in Assam for a third consecutive term. The meeting, taking place at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, involves the newly-elected BJP MLAs. Following this, a joint meeting of NDA legislators is scheduled to elect the ruling alliance’s leader in the state.
Preparations are underway for the swearing-in ceremony of the new NDA government, slated for May 12. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union Ministers, and BJP-ruled state Chief Ministers are expected to attend. Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia mentioned that the party will formally stake a claim to form the government before Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya.
“We will elect the leader of the BJP Legislature Party today… After this, a meeting with the NDA legislators would be held. Later in the day, we will meet the Governor and stake a claim for the government,” Saikia stated. He also highlighted the rapid progress in preparations for the oath-taking ceremony, with a significant presence expected from the alliance leadership.
Outgoing Minister Bimal Bora emphasized the increasing support for the BJP, not only in Assam but nationwide. He expressed that the electoral outcome reflects the public’s desire for a BJP government due to dissatisfaction with the Congress party’s governance. Bora noted the strong performance of the NDA in Assam, securing an absolute majority with 102 out of 126 seats.
BJP MLA-elect Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha voiced support for incumbent Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma continuing in office for another term. Purkayastha, who previously belonged to the Congress party, criticized his former party’s approach and expressed privilege in witnessing Sarma’s leadership. Rajya Sabha MP Jogen Mohan expressed confidence in the formation of the new government, describing the occasion as a significant moment for Assam.
