Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Rameshwar Sharma stirred controversy by stating that the population growth of Muslims is causing demographic changes in various regions, leading to tension and fear in society. Sharma advocated for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and population control measures, suggesting a restriction on parents having more than three children. He also called for a ban on those with excessive children, citing the need for family planning, even referencing former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s views on the matter. Sharma urged the Congress party to support the government in implementing the UCC, emphasizing the importance of the issue.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav recently announced the forthcoming implementation of the UCC law in Madhya Pradesh, stating that religion-based personal laws for marriage and family matters are no longer necessary. Yadav highlighted the need for a Uniform Civil Code in the state, signaling a shift from the current practice of diverse personal laws. The state government is engaging in consultations with legal experts and the public to formulate the UCC bill. Despite Sharma’s statements, the Congress leaders had not responded to his comments as of Wednesday evening.
