BJP MP Anurag Thakur mentioned that the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) is engaging with political parties and officials nationwide to gather feedback on the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal. The committee is currently in Lucknow for consultations on this electoral reform. Thakur emphasized the need for simultaneous elections to prevent governance disruptions caused by the Model Code of Conduct.
Thakur highlighted that the current electoral system’s frequent enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct hampers governance and delays development projects. He pointed out that the electoral cycle often diverts personnel from essential administrative tasks. Despite varying opinions among political parties, there is substantial support for the ‘One Nation, One Election’ concept.
The BJP leader noted the existence of diverse perspectives on simultaneous elections, with data backing the benefits of this reform. While some parties express concerns about national issues overshadowing regional ones, many people endorse the initiative. The JPC is set to finalize its report on July 17 and submit it to Parliament for review. The proposed reform aims to synchronize Lok Sabha and state legislative assembly elections.
