The ruling BJP legislature party in Tripura has nominated veteran tribal MLA Ram Pada Jamatia to be the next Speaker of the state’s Legislative Assembly. The proposal was put forth during a meeting where Chief Minister Manik Saha and other senior leaders were present. Jamatia, elected in the 2023 Assembly polls, received support from BJP’s allies for the Speaker’s post.
The election for the new Speaker arose due to the passing of the previous Speaker, Biswa Bandhu Sen, on December 26, 2025. The upcoming Budget session of the Tripura Assembly is set to commence on March 13, with Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu delivering the opening day’s address. The session’s agenda, including the introduction of bills to establish three new universities, was finalized earlier.
The state government plans to introduce bills for the establishment of Tripura Women’s University, Tripura University of Health Sciences, and Tripura Technical University. Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy is scheduled to present the Budget for the financial year 2026–27 on March 16, along with the Supplementary Budget for 2025-26. The Budget session is expected to run until March 25, with a focus on allocating more funds to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council.
