The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to observe ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ (Constitution Murder Day) in Bihar, Haryana, and various parts of the country on Thursday, marking the anniversary of the 1975 Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The party plans to conduct events nationwide to emphasize the impact of the Emergency on democratic institutions and civil liberties.
In Bihar, activities will take place at approximately 90,000 booths throughout the state. Union Health Minister and BJP national president J.P. Nadda will honor around 450 ‘JP fighters’ and ‘Democracy warriors’ at Gyan Bhavan in Patna for their contributions during the anti-Emergency movement. Party leaders in Bihar criticized the Emergency era for curtailing citizens’ fundamental rights and undermining democratic institutions to maintain political control.
The BJP in Bihar will organize district-level workers’ conferences in all 52 organizational districts between June 30 and July 6. Additionally, student conferences will be held across five administrative divisions under the joint auspices of the party’s youth and women’s wings. In Haryana, BJP leaders condemned the Emergency as a dark chapter in India’s democratic history, highlighting the Congress party’s actions during that period.
Addressing a press conference at the party’s state headquarters Panchkamal, Yamunanagar MLA Ghanshyam Das Arora accused the Congress government of restricting democratic freedoms, weakening institutional autonomy, and imposing restrictions on freedom of expression during the Emergency. Arora claimed that numerous activists and journalists were imprisoned, and media censorship was rigorously enforced. Organizations like the RSS and the erstwhile Jana Sangh vehemently opposed the Emergency, advocating for the restoration of democratic rights and constitutional governance.
The observance of ‘Constitution Murder Day’ aims to pay tribute to those who fought for democracy’s reinstatement and to educate younger generations about the Emergency period’s events and repercussions. A special program is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Thursday at Atal Sabhagar, located at the BJP headquarters in Panchkula.
